Petition to Reduce N.C. Veteran Homelessness

To Our Leaders in the General Assembly:

This petition seeks to provide North Carolina homeless veterans with long-term, permanent housing or shelters in order to help veterans avoid crime/recidivism, depression, substance abuse, and to provide counseling services to help them re-integrate into mainstream society.

We, the undersigned, urge our leaders to act now to provide additional funding to expand veteran services, which are not meeting the needs of those who served but now find themselves in dire circumstances.

Thank You Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler

We, the undersigned, would like to express our thanks to N.C. Department of Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler for maintaining the ban on concealed weapons at the NC State Fair. Everyone should feel safe at our state fairgrounds. We hope that people will listen to Commissioner Steve Troxler’s message to leave their guns in the car or at home so that everyone can have a safe time at the fair.

Ban the Box

Those with criminal records are routinely required to check a box on local and state employment applications acknowledging their conviction. A past record often prevents the applicant from being considered for a job prior to an interview. Those with criminal records should not continue to be punished after they have paid their debt to society.

We support restoring opportunities for gainful employment and productive citizenship to North Carolinians with criminal records. Accordingly, we call on Gov. Pat McCrory and members of the North Carolina General Assembly to “Ban the Box,” and establish fair hiring procedures that prevent the unnecessary exclusion of applicants with criminal records from public employment with local and state agencies.
